Project Requirements
The operator of a municipal solid waste landfill in Bulgaria was looking for an efficient solution for the treatment of landfill leachate with fluctuating hydraulic loads and varying contaminant concentrations. The main challenge was the elevated content of suspended solids and fine particles.
The required technology had to ensure:
- High suspended solids removal efficiency
- Stable operation despite fluctuations in the quality of the incoming water
- Minimal operator intervention
- Continuous automatic operation
- Long-term operational reliability under demanding landfill operating conditions
Proposed Solution
ENVITES designed and supplied a treatment system consisting of three LB4 lamella clarifiers and three KFP2000 continuous sand filters.
The first treatment stage is provided by the LB4 lamella clarifiers which ensure the gravitational separation of suspended solids. The effective settling area is significantly increased and lamella settler has compact dimensions. Lamella clarifiers provide an efficient solution for the pre-treatment of industrial water and wastewater with a high concentration of suspended solids.
The sedimentation stage is followed by KFP2000 continuous sand filtration which removes the remaining fine particles. The filter media is automatically regenerated at regular intervals during operation. There is no need to interrupt the filtration process for backwashing of the contaminated sand bed. This ensures continuous operation, high operational reliability and stable water quality even under fluctuating loading conditions.
